Bite the clock
Today most public sector organizations are involved in a cost reduction pace due to crisis. Countries like Spain, has incredible budget-constrains, which avoid large investments to improve productivity. But what we understand when we talk about productivity, if we look at dictionary, productivity is the existing relation between the products produced and the used resources to obtain these products.
Probably this a good definition for a toys company, but in public sector what means productivity?, what means produce more?, which is the main asset public sector produces?. From my point of view the main asset is improve citizens’ lives.
And what means improve citizens’ lives? It means imagine new ways to facilitate live, like increase health, reduce polution, improve traffice management, improve tax returns. But these things are all of them political messages. And we know, political messages sometimes are empty messages, if messages are not accompanied by actions.
Let me come back to productivity. Public staff understand productivity as task-todo’s-like management pattern, a list of task to do, and productivity mantra appear as a “tool” to accelerate the execution of these tasks, fast email management, sharing documents faster, faster communications, faster meeting outcomes management, bla, bla, bla… Ok, its fine, they are fine, taks-todo’s-like tools can help accelerate this pattern, and helps public staff to be up to date with their taks.
But this is not productivity, or at least it is not just that. Productivity is about automation, what if you can automate everyone of these tasks or at least some of them. You do not need to be on top of every task on your daily work, you can automate a lot of them and get free time.
Public sector leaders sometimes say, ok, more time, but more time for what? Easy, more time to think-in-a-innovative-way how to improve citizens’ lives. This is the productivity main return.
Today you can deploy great productivity tools, you will get great results in the task management area, for sure, and you need it, because today digital transformation requires the new digital tools. But also you need to automate and for that you need define what, when and how to automate to get free time and innovate, but this innovation is another history.
